What is the difference between AI, ML, and deep learning?
AI is the broad goal of machine intelligence; ML is a subset that learns from data; deep learning is a subset of ML using multi-layer neural networks - each is nested inside the previous.
AIMachine Learning
Overview
These three terms are often used interchangeably but they describe different levels of specificity. Think of concentric circles: AI is the outermost (broadest goal), ML sits inside it (a method to achieve AI by learning from data), and deep learning sits inside ML (a specific ML technique using neural networks with many layers).
Key Points
- •**Artificial Intelligence (AI)**: the broad field of building machines that exhibit intelligent behaviour - anything from a chess engine to a chatbot.
- •**Machine Learning (ML)**: a subset of AI where systems learn from data without being explicitly programmed. Classic examples: decision trees, SVMs, linear regression.
- •**Deep Learning**: a subset of ML using neural networks with many layers (hence "deep"). Excels at unstructured data - images, audio, text.
- •**LLMs and generative AI**: a product of deep learning - specifically transformers trained on text at scale.
- •Traditional ML requires feature engineering (humans decide what matters); deep learning learns features automatically from raw data.
Examples
The three levels illustrated in code
python# AI - rule-based (no learning, still "intelligent" behaviour)
def classify_email(email):
if any(word in email for word in ['free', 'win', 'prize']):
return 'spam'
return 'not spam'
# ML - learns rules from labelled data
from sklearn.naive_bayes import MultinomialNB
model = MultinomialNB()
model.fit(X_train, y_train) # learns from examples
predictions = model.predict(X_test)
# Deep Learning - learns from raw text automatically
from transformers import pipeline
classifier = pipeline('text-classification', model='distilbert-base-uncased')
result = classifier("Congratulations! You've won a prize!")
# [{'label': 'SPAM', 'score': 0.97}]When to use each approach
textRule-based AI → Fixed logic, small input space, full explainability required
Classic ML → Structured/tabular data, fast training, need to understand features
Deep Learning → Images, audio, raw text - unstructured data at scale
LLM / Gen AI → Natural language tasks, generation, reasoning, few-shot learningPro Tip
For structured tabular data (CSV, database rows), gradient-boosted trees (XGBoost, LightGBM) still outperform deep learning in most benchmarks and are far cheaper to train. Reach for deep learning and LLMs when your input is unstructured (images, text, audio) or when you need generative capabilities.
